Such a multitude of musos out there, tuning into Vintage TV, so we thought we’d do our discerning viewers a service and provide a song request show. Pat Sharp is at the helm as he sifts through the email and social media sites to play the tracks most asked for from the 80s and 90s. There’ll be entertaining chat about the choices from the irrepressible presenter too!
Monday 16th March, 1.00pm - Twiggy: My Mixtape
Mini-skirted with a cute crop, Twiggy epitomised the swinging Sixties. And this model, actress and singer has been a darling of stage and screen ever since. But that’s not to say she doesn’t get starstruck, she reveals on this week’s episode of My Mixtape. In her top song collection are tracks from her musical heroines Dolly Parton and Joni Mitchell, both of whom she was thrilled and over-awed to meet. There is a Johnny Mathis number for her much-missed dad, and Lady Gaga brings her bang up to date.
Tuesday 17th March, 10.30pm - Neil McCormick’s Needle Time: David Essex
As a tousled-haired, twinkly-eyed heart-throb in the 70s, this London-born son of an East End docker shot to fame with international hits such as ‘Gonna Make You a Star’, ‘Rock On’ and ‘Hold Me Close’. Not just a talented singer-songwriter, David Essex, who is in the Needle Time hotseat this week, is also an acclaimed actor and star of stage and screen, with musical ‘Godspell’ and films ‘That’ll Be The Day’ and sequel ‘Stardust’ to his name.
Wednesday 18th March, 1.00pm - Carol Decker: My Mixtape
Carol Decker, the flame-haired frontwoman of internationally successful 80s pop rock outfit T’Pau picks the tunes that go kapow for her. There are tributes to those she has toured with, with songs from Nik Kershaw, Bryan Adams and bessie mates the Bananarama girls. And then there are tracks like ‘Billie Jean’ from Michael Jackson and ‘All Night Long’ from Lionel Ritchie that get her toe-tapping, and those that turn her on, such as ‘Enter Sandman’ from the leather trousered heavy metallers Metallica. It’s a genre mash up of a My Mixtape!
Wednesday 18th March, 10.30pm - Live With… Leddra Chapman
Known for her high soprano voice, likened to early Alanis Morissette and Joni Mitchell and championed by BBC Radio 2, this young Essex-born singer-songwriter is quite a talent. And we are very pleased to welcome Leddra Chapman, who also plays guitar and piano, to The Crypt Studios where she will introduce and perform songs from her acclaimed back catalogue.
Friday 20th March, 11.00pm - The Vintage TV Sessions
All the atmosphere of a live gig from the comfort of your own sofa – that’s the idea behind The Vintage TV Sessions, recorded at The Bedford in Balham. Sit back and drink in the intoxicating offerings of two fantastic songs apiece from Cockney Rebel Steve Harley, the lovely Lulu, northern indie rockers The Dunwells and acclaimed young singer songwriters Tom Hickox and Fiona Bevan. And making you feel right at home is host Bob Harris, the legendary radio presenter.
Saturday 21st March, 7.30pm - Live With… Hazel O’Connor
She was the undisputed queen of new wave in the 80s, stamping her mark on punk and beyond. Now Hazel O’Connor brings her very cool music credentials to The Crypt studio, performing a bunch of brilliant songs including ‘Don't You Call Me Darling’, ‘I'll Give You My Sunshine’ and ‘Going Home’.
Sunday 22nd March, 5.00pm - Saffron: My Vintage
Emerging after a wave of female-fronted bands such as Elastica and Kenickie, Republica blasted through with a more aggressive and electronica vibe. Vocalist Samantha Sprackling, aka Saffron, spiced up the scene in the mid to late 90s with genre-defying music that was described as ‘technopop punk rock’. She’s back with the band, and choosing her all-time top My Vintage tunes which include those from iconic groups she has collaborated with such as The Prodigy and The Cure.
