Channel Highlights w/c 24th August
Saturday 24th August, 8.00pm - Night of Alternative Rock
It’s gonna be loud and it’s gonna be raucous. Prepare for an awesome evening bristling with attitude, fearsome feedback and distorted guitars as we reel in those alternative rockers from across the pond, in a three-hour, three-programme special featuring music by the legendary Nirvana (8pm), with the tracks that woke up a generation to a dirty new sound, the best of Grunge Pioneers (9pm), and the underground acts of American Alternative Rock (10pm) including Green Day, RHCP, Foo Fighters and more.
Sunday 25th August, 5.30pm - Beverley Craven: My Vintage (and Thursday 29th August at 11pm)
In the hot seat this week, for our regular root through the records that mean the most to our esteemed guests, is British piano-playing singer-songwriter of ‘Promise Me’ fame, Beverley Craven, who took to tinkling the ivories at the tender age of seven, and has gone on to sell 4 million records worldwide. Her top tracks include Alison Moyet’s ‘All Cried Out’ and Barry White’s ‘Just the Way You Are’. .
Monday 26th August, 11.00pm - The Janice Long Review Show
Janice is joined by Jethro Tull’s Ian Anderson, godfather of folk rock Simon Nicol of Fairport Convention, and journalist Michael Booker, to pick over the finer points of iconic albums – Christy Moore’s brave and moving ‘Ride On’, which charts the political struggles and historical hardships of his Irish homeland, and Jethro Tull’s ‘Thick as a Brick’, the prog rockers’ bombastic “mother of all concept albums”.
Wednesday 28th August, 11.00pm - The Janice Long Review Show
The first ladies of punk – Viv Albertine of influential English group The Slits and Lene Lovich of ‘Lucky Number’ fame – along with journalist and rock writer Terry Staunton, join Janice to share their thoughts on the eponymous album which really nailed it for The Ramones, blasting through all the ‘up itself’ rock of the late 70s, and the poignant and painfully honest ‘Back to Black’ from Amy Winehouse which still brings goosebumps out in one guest.
