Hazel talks sexism

“Being women in the music industry, it gets a little sexist” - Hazel O’Connor

Hazel O’Connor and Sandie Shaw talk sexism in the music industry and why ‘everything gets better’ as you get older.  Before our 80s diva Hazel O’Connor took to the stage, she had an honest chat with Sandie Shaw about what it means to be a woman ‘of a certain age’ in the music industry.

Commenting on her two other female band members, Hazel says “we find quite often, as three women playing shows, it gets a little sexist because people think that we’re three dithery-dodderies. It happens quite often”.

Sandie agrees, “It’s always been that way. I was always the only girl in the room. Always, always, always… and you see men at their worst not their best.”  Despite this, Hazel assures Sandie that she doesn’t take it to heart and that getting older has only made her more confident, “the fact that I’m travelling with two other women, we’re all in our fifties and we don’t give a sh**.”
