"I wanted a sound that would really wake me up" - David Gray

“I felt deeply bored, bored of myself, of my thoughts. I didn’t want to write some sort of middle-aged vague complaint about existence. I wanted to be saying hallelujah in a new way. I wanted to hear a sound that would really wake me up.” – David Gray

Vintage TV were honoured to have the legendary David Gray grace our studios this week. Interviewed by Neil McCormick, chief music journalist of The Telegraph, David shared with us why his new album is different from anything he’s ever done before and why his relationship with music is ‘addictive’ and constantly evolving.

“It’s very inspiring to conjure something from nowhere that can change not only the way that you’re thinking, but the way other people think and feel,” says David. “Something magical can happen and it’s very hard to do that in the equivalent of a family situation and relationship. Everyone puts a lot of effort into those but it’s not like the sparks are flying all the time, it’s just drudgery and responsibility. That’s what family life becomes. Whereas with your music, your work, whatever you’re making, it can suddenly light up your mind and you can be somewhere else and somebody else and be out of all these other thoughts.”

Keep your eyes peeled for David’s Needle Time interview, coming soon on Vintage TV.
