Leo Sayer: The show must go on. And on...
Leo Sayer proves a surprising guest on Neil McCormick’s Needle Time, garrulous, cheerful, comical and yet philosophical as he tells tales from five decades in and out of the spotlight.
The Seventies pop superstar acknowledges that he became pigeonholed as a middle of the road ballad singer with transatlantic hits like When I Need You but reminisces about his Sixties origins as a blues singer, his unlikely friendships with Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Springsteen, and how he almost became the frontman for heavy rock band Free.
Neil has a confession of his own to make: that Leo’s debut single The Show Must Go On was one of the first records he ever bought. “It was a song about doing crappy gigs,” confesses Leo. “It was inspired by supporting Slade.”
Find out more about this unusual Vintage star on Needle Time. “I love being 65,” insists Leo. “I think my best is yet to come.”
Neil McCormick's Needle Time with is broadcast on Vintage TV at 10pm, Tuesday 17th December and repeated Saturday (22nd) at 7pm
